October 11th, 2011 by ppatters

July 2010     I was invited to present to  Spanish high school AP teachers on the use of Technology in language teaching at the AP  Summer Institute at Rice University.   ppt for presentation

February 2010 and February and March 2011 and February 2012    Language Teaching Methodology workshop/course: I developed a Language Teaching Methodology and Pedagogy 2-week course for English teachers from the Heilongjiang province of China and taught the course/workshop at Rice University for three different groups from China.  In February of 2010 I taught the course for 28 high school English teachers from Harbin and surrounding towns of the Heilongjiang province in China and in February of 2011 I taught a shorter 5-day course to a group of 50 high school English teachers from Heilongjiang.  In March of 2011 I taught an 8-day course to 25 University English professors from various universities in China.  In February 2012 I taught two groups: 1 week workshop for high school English teachers and a 1 week workshop for university English professors from China.  I researched textbooks and chose one for the course.  I wrote a syllabus and created powerpoints for the lectures that I presented.   The powerpoints are linked to my webpage at lang.rice.edu/ppatters.  (ppts for university professors and ppts for high school teachers).  For each of the four courses I have revised the syllabus and materials to fit the attendees’ needs and the time period of the course.  I also revised and made changes to the course based on feedback from participants.

Project with Poe Elementary

In the fall 2011 semester the students in my two  SPAN 101 classes  created a PHOTOSTORY in groups of two or three students.  The stories are appropriate for a 9-10 year-old audience.  They write and narrate a story for children that has a moral or has educational value.  The class  then votes for the best two photostories and we  take a group of volunteers from the class to Poe Elementary to present the photostories to a bilingual class.  The students in the class then vote for their favorite story with their applause.  In the spring 2012 semester I plan to do the same project in SPAN 101 and take the Photostories to Tijerina Elem. in East Houston.

Faculty Mentor at Duncan College

In the fall of 2011 Rice began a new program for freshmen called the Mentor program.  I volunteered to be a mentor for one O-week group at Duncan College.  I met my O-week group during O-week at the associates dinner and I continue to eat lunch with the group  every other week on Fridays at Duncan College.  I plan to get to know the students throughout the semester and chat with them during lunchtime to help if they need it or provide information to any questions they may have.  In 2013 I have continued as a mentor for a group of students at Duncan College.

Faculty Associate for Duncan College and Divisional Advisor

I have been a faculty associate for Duncan College since it opened in the fall of 2009.  As an associate I eat lunch with the students periodically throughout the semester and I attend the associate dinner each semester.  I have participated as a judge for the pumpkin carving at Halloween and I have baked cookies for study breaks during final exams.  I also assist another Duncan associate with an associate dinner during O-week each year.   Since the fall of 2009 I have been a Divisional advisor for Humanities for Duncan College.  I participate in the divisional advisor training each year before O-week and I attend several activities with the freshmen during O-week.  I advise a number of freshmen during O-week and continue to contact them  throughout the semester by email particularly mid-semester after pumpkin grades are out and before pre-registration in fall and spring semesters.

Duncan Buddy Program

In the fall 2011 Duncan College began a new program called the Buddy program.  Faculty Associates are paired with one student at a buddy.   I received a buddy in September and we met at a hamburger cookout at Duncan which associates were invited to.  We have continued to meet for lunch at Duncan and plan to meet at least once a month for lunch and we exchange email periodically.  I plan to continue  to get to know my “buddy” this semester and provide any support or help that she may need or just be a friend.

Beer Bike Judge

In Spring 2012 and spring 2013 I volunteered as a Judge for Beer Bike at Rice University.  I worked as a finish line judge for all bike races.
