I received my PhD in Hispanic Linguistics from the University of Texas at Austin in 2001 where I specialized in Applied Linguistics: Second Language Acquisition. My dissertation, Computer Assisted Language Learning: A Comparison of Discourse Produced in Computer Assisted and Oral Class Discussions by Spanish Learners, focused on Computer Assisted Language Learning (CALL) and Negotiation for Meaning in the acquisition of languages. As a graduate student at the University of Texas I taught first and second year Spanish and third year Conversation classes. After completing my PhD I taught for two years at UT as a lecturer: Advanced Grammar, Spanish Phonetics, and Intensive first year Spanish. As adjunct faculty at Austin Community College I also taught Spanish language for 10 years. In July 2003 I began teaching Spanish in the Center for the Study of Languages (CSL) at Rice University in Houston and am currently retired from Rice. At Rice I taught all three years of Spanish language, Practical Spanish Phonetics, and a Language Teaching Methodology Class for Spanish and French graduate students. I was the coordinator for first year Spanish Language for 4 years and for second year Spanish Language courses for two years. I was also the coordinator for the Spanish Placement test in CSL for five years. From 2009-2014 I was also the Divisional Advisor for Humanities for freshmen at Duncan College at Rice and I also participated in the first year Mentor program at Rice for freshman O-week groups at Duncan College. I have been a Faculty Associate for Duncan College since the college opened in 2009.
